Johns Hopkins Information Technology provides the Johns Hopkins research community with highly scalable, performant, and secure storage and transfer solutions.

Johns Hopkins IT provides the following Research Data Storage and Transfer services:

SAFE-STOR & SAFER-STOR

Short Separator
An infographic explaining the differences between SAFE-STOR and SAFER-STOR.

Managed by Johns Hopkins Information Technology, SAFE-STOR and SAFER-STOR are highly scalable, performant, and protected storage solutions available to Johns Hopkins investigators and adhere to a wide range of data compliance levels.

Get started with safe-stor & SAFER-STOR

Access

All SAFE-STOR and SAFER-STOR projects and access requests require a PI’s approval. Once the submitted request has been approved by the PI, it will then be fulfilled by Research IT within 3 business days based on the order in which it is received.

SAFE-STOR is accessible from SAFE Desktop.

SAFER-STOR is accessible from SAFER Desktop and DISCOVERY HPC.

Data Security & Use

Both solutions are recommended for active research projects up to 100 TB and have a three-year data protection in place.

SAFE-STOR is best for user interactions, small-to-mid scale instrument data collection, organizing collections of data sets, and subsequent analysis. SAFE-STOR is suitable for projects requiring HIPAA, PHI/PII, LDS, and non-PHI/PII compliance.

In addition to the use cases listed above, SAFER-STOR is best for projects that require NIST SP 800-171 and/or Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Level 2 data compliance, in addition to HIPAA, PHI/PII, LDS, and non PHI/PII. This includes projects involving NIH Controlled-Access Data and Repositories included under the NIH genomic data sharing policy, Research Enclave for Analyzing Clinical Health data (REACH) projects, and other regulated research requiring this level of information security standard. SAFER-STOR is also suitable for projects involving the use of DISCOVERY HPC.

Cost Structure

Up to 10 TB of storage is free for SAFE-STOR and SAFER-STOR users for the first three years. After three years, a yearly charge of $6/TB/month will be applied.

10-100 TB of storage is $6/TB/month. If users require more than 100 TB of storage, it is recommended they contact Research IT to determine the optimal solution for their project(s).

Specifications

While SAFER-STOR is mountable to DISCOVERY HPC, SAFE-STOR is not. For more information on SAFE and SAFER Desktops, please visit the Virtual Desktops page.

Azure Blob Storage

Short Separator

Offered through Johns Hopkins University’s managed Microsoft Azure services, Azure Blob Storage provides scalable and secure object storage for cloud-native workloads, archives, data lakes, high-performance computing, and machine learning.

Get started with azure blob storage

Access

Azure Blob Storage can be accessed by anyone with a Johns Hopkins JHED ID.

Data Security & Use

Azure Blob Storage is HIPAA/PHI-compliant.

There are several access tiers available for Azure Blob Storage:

  • Hot tier
    • Online tier optimized for storing data that is accessed or modified frequently
    • Highest storage costs, but the lowest access costs
  • Cool tier
    • Online tier optimized for storing data that is infrequently accessed or modified
    • Data should be stored for a minimum of 30 days
    • Lower storage costs and higher access costs compared to the hot tier
  • Cold tier
    • Online tier optimized for storing data that is rarely accessed or modified, but still requires fast retrieval
    • Data should be stored for a minimum of 90 days
    • Lower storage costs and higher access costs compared to the cool tier
  • Archive tier
    • Offline tier optimized for storing data that is rarely accessed and has flexible latency requirements
    • Data should be stored for a minimum of 180 days
    • Lowest storage cost, high retrieval cost

Cost Structure

Azure offers several different pricing tiers for data storage. To learn more, please visit their pricing page.

Specifications

Azure storage capacity limits are set at the account level, rather than according to access tier. Investigators can choose to maximize their storage usage in one tier, or to distribute capacity across two or more tiers. For more information please fill out the Research IT intake form.
