SAFER and SAFE (Desktop)

Short Separator

The SAFER (Secure Analytic Framework Environment for Research) Research Virtual Desktop and SAFE (Secure Analytic Framework Environment) Desktop are designed to empower researchers, enhance collaboration with internal and external researchers, and accelerate scientific discovery. Whether you’re analyzing protected data, conducting simulations, or collaborating with colleagues, SAFER and SAFE Desktop provide a secure and efficient Windows workspace.

SAFER is designed for researchers who require a more powerful Windows machine or meet a use case that requires secure environment than SAFE Desktop can provide. SAFER can be referenced in research publications for citations. SAFER targets NIST 800-171 for controlled and classified data for protected data handling and strict access controls to safeguard sensitive research data. SAFER operates in the cloud, eliminating the need for on-premises hardware.

Both options employ multi-factor authentication (MFA) using JHED ID. Researchers can access their virtual desktops from any device with an internet connection. SAFER and SAFE Desktop is distributed to each individual who utilizes the service.

SAFER and SAFE Desktop comes pre-loaded with analytic tools tailored for research. Researchers can utilize statistical software to analyze complex datasets to streamline workflows.

For access to SAFER, submit the Research IT Intake Form

Access to Secure Research Storage and Research HPC

Short Separator

SAFER and SAFE Desktop provide access to secure storage for research data. Researchers can store and organize their datasets with protected storage accessible for up to 100TB through SAFER via the Research SAFESTOR (NAS) – Research NAS (R: Drive). Ensures data remains within a controlled environment. For more information on SAFESTOR, learn more here. For storage options for greater than 100TB, please complete this SAFESTOR Request Form.

SAFER and SAFE Desktop integrates with DISCOVERY, the research high-performance computing (HPC) clusters. Researchers can seamlessly connect to specialized HPC resources to bridge the gap between desktop analytics and large-scale simulations. For more information on DISCOVERY (HPC), learn more here. For access to DISCOVERY (HPC), please complete this form.

Upon the request submission, a member of Research IT will contact you by email in 1 to 3 business days. Following initial contact, a dedicated meeting to your request will occur within 3 to 5 business days depending on both party’s availability.
