What is SAFESTOR?
SAFESTOR is the Network Attached Storage (NAS) for research purpose that is a secure and protected data storage option supported by Research IT@JH. Accessible from the SAFE Desktop and SAFER, SAFESTOR option is highly scalable and performant while offering data protection.
SAFESTOR is recommended for active research projects up to 100TB with wide range of use cases – user interactions, small-mid scale instrument data collection, organizing collections of data sets and subsequent analysis. SAFESTOR has three-year protection in place.

Upon the request submission, a member of Research IT will contact you by email in 1 to 2 business days. Following initial contact, a dedicated meeting to your request will occur within 3 to 5 business days depending on both party’s availability.
Cost Structure
– Up to 10TB is free for three years
– After three years, a one-time yearly charge of $6/TB per month will be applied.
– 10-100TB is $6/TB per month
– Recommend engaging Research IT to determine the optimal solution for projects requiring more than 100TB
– No cost for project archiving
Data Archiving
Every year, project data can be renewed up to five years, after which data will be archived. Once a project is ready for archiving, the data is automatically archived to cloud cold storage. Through a request process to move out of cold storage, archived data is still accessible to the research team. At this time, only entire projects can be archived. Individual share folders are unable to be archived.
