We are happy to announce that the IT@JH Research IT environment is now compliant with the National Institute of Standards and Technology Special Publication (NIST SP) 800-171 information security standard. Compliance with NIST SP 800-171, which provides requirements for protecting controlled unclassified information in nonfederal systems and organizations, offers Johns Hopkins researchers additional assurances of sensitive information protection that are now more often required for grant-funded research projects.

This implementation is part of our strategic initiative to strengthen Research IT infrastructure and support investigators in conducting a broader range of projects. By alleviating some of the challenges associated with implementing complex technical controls, the Research IT environment allows investigators to apply more focus to their project responsibilities.

Additionally, the IT@JH Research IT environment is approved at the institutional level by the Johns Hopkins Office of the Chief Information Security Officer to meet the requirement of NIH Security Best Practices for Controlled-Access Data and Repositories, including implementation of the updated data management and access practices under the genomic data sharing policy, and other regulated research requiring this level of information security standard.
